Early tyranny – synonymous to monarchia for the Archaic Greeks – is in many respects comparable to the city-state monarchies in the Near East, and the rule of the tyrants can be viewed as a monarchic way of polis formation. We must therefore ask why the Greeks generally did not accept this development, which was – on the other hand – very usual throughout world history. This question will be discussed relying mainly on the evidence for the Corinthian tyranny as an example.
