Historiography usually identifies a fixed model of understanding the relationships between the monarchy and the Church in the Merovingian or the Visigothic Kingdoms in which kings imposed their secular supremacy and maintained it over time. The aim of this lecture is proposing an alternative perspective, considering that each monarch conceived his role on religious and ecclesiastical issues in different ways. Furthermore, the internal political context, such as the balance of power existing in each territory, also influenced the adoption of a determined attitude toward the Church. All these aspects conditioned, ultimately, the development of a more flexible model of relations between kings and bishops.
