Wir freuen uns sehr Ihnen den Vortrag von Professor Joseph L. Rife anzukündigen: Joseph L. Rife ist Associate Professor im Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies, Vanderbilt University. Visiting Scholar, institute for Archaeology, Universität Hamburg.
"Kenchreai, the eastern port of Corinth in southern Greece, was one of the busiest and most prosperous harbors on the western Aegean seaboard during the Roman Empire to the Early Byzantine period. The archaeological remains of the site have been known since the early 20th century. Recent systematic exploration has been carried out by an international team under the direction of Joseph Rife under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies with the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture. Apart from artifacts and structures, we find a wealth of information about ancient Kenchreai and how it changed over time in the written sources. Prof Rife will discuss a range of material texts, or written artifacts, from Kenchreai—sources that are both documentary and artifactual in nature. These include graffiti, tombstones, dipinti, and inscribed prayers and dedications. This class of historical sources attests to the identities and interactions of the local community. Such testimony reveals important dimensions of local experience in a changing world from the era of Roman rule to the dawn of the Byzantine Middle Ages, including the evolving use of urban and suburban space, dedicatory and commemorative habits, and religious ritual."
Wir freuen uns auf einen spannenden Vortrag und heißen Interessierte herzlich willkommen!
