Colloquium Atticum
Hamburger Workshop über aktuelle Forschungen zur Polis Athen
The Colloquia Attica are a new conference series to be held annually at the University of Hamburg. Every summer, up to eight international scholars are supposed to meet in Hamburg for two days to discuss new research trends in Athenian history. Through a new format these colloquia respond to some shortcomings in the current culture of organizing conferences. The workshop character results in few participants only and thus makes for an intensive work atmosphere conducive to open discussion across disciplinary boundaries.
It is our goal to invite scholars of various disciplines to an informal exchange of views to Hamburg on a regular basis. Young scholars embarking on their careers are supposed to meet up with senior colleagues and leading experts in the field. If possible, the participants should present work in progress and experimental theses. By putting the papers online shortly after the colloquium to communicate their findings to a broader scholarly audience, we intend to grant the authors more time to let their ideas grow and rework their papers for an ensuing print publication. Consecutive workshops will treat similar topics, i.e. the contributions to two or three Colloquia might be interconnected and hopefully make for greater thematic coherence than is usual in many collaborative projects.
With the Colloquia Attica we aim to build up an international network of researchers focusing on ancient Athens from various disciplinary viewpoints, bring them together in Hamburg and thus establish the Hamburg Colloquia Attica as a crossroads of ideas and initiatives elucidating what the history and culture of classical Athens may mean to us today.
